The last place I expect to find halfway decent sushi is inside a scanty mall, let alone inside a scanty mall waterside on Decatur Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans. But find sushi I did, and it was better than halfway decent.
The area in general is much like any other in the French Quarter– amazing architecture, loads of shopping stores and food establishments, even more drinking establishments… The view across the street was beautiful though the mall itself was nothing super exciting. In fact, the mall and sushi restaurant were accidental stumbles as my friends and I walked through Earthbound Trading Co., the back end of which ran into the mall, leading to the escalator which lead up into the food court, which might have been the most exciting (action-filled) section of the small mall.
They say don’t judge a book by its cover, and I did find the ninja sensei cat, sushi clock, and warrior sword decor to be charming at the absolute least.
Pardon the unflattering photo quality, I was all low blood sugar and on the vodka-infused prowl for excitement on this drizzly weather day, and apparently not overly concerned with picture quality.
Anyway, most food options were typical sea creature catered, but there was a veggie roll and side of edamame that caught my eye.
Quite lovely to my OCD eye, I got to see everything I ordered made fresh right there in the small kitchen of Jazz Sushi. My veggie roll came in 8 pieces, and the edamame portion (half gotten into in the photo as I was excited as well as hungry) was plentiful. The man who was presumably the owner and sushi master was very kind and friendly. My food? SO fresh! Like… taste the garden fresh. You can’t ask for much more beyond that because seaweed and rice with wasabi will generally taste like seaweed and rice with wasabi. But considering it’s not the Creole/Cajun theme food most people consider the culinary core of New Orleans, this was a lighter fare and “clean eating” change of pace amidst the heavier foods I would eat during my vacation. All in all, easy prices for the wallet, hardly any wait time, fresh AND healthy? I’d give it 10/10 and recommend it for the NOLA traveler who wants to try something a little different and pace the food combinations the French Quarter typically offers. Thanks Jazz Sushi! And to everyone else… Happy Eating. 🙂
