** (I accidentally deleted half my media library, and my personal photos of The Hummus & Pita Co. were among those that were unfortunately NOT recoverable, so I’ve supplemented picture reference via Google photos with origination included below the pictures).
Before I get into the amazing aspects of this restaurant, a short preface first:
While I admit their vegan selection is too colorful and expansive to be ignored, I’m a little sad about this establishment supporting animal cruelty by the many meat products offered on their menu. Silver lining? Bang for the buck!
We’re talking about The Hummus & Pita Co.
This Middle Eastern fusion restaurant boasts three different locations in NYC spread out from Midtown down to Wall Street, and has a large scale of customizable dishes depending on the size of your appetite and preference from sandwich to salad to platter spread.
Like many restaurants, they even boast their own instagram page where the hummus lover can stay informed on the latest updates, such as a new location opening up in Detroit, Michigan in the near future.
Like a true hungry vegan, my food was so delicious (and I was dipping so hard from low blood sugar after a gym session on an empty stomach) that I dove in like it was my last meal on Earth before I remembered to take a picture for reference. Here are some samples of falafel platters:
Falafel. That’s my “meat” of choice, followed by my pick of hummus (plain is free while choosing one of their flavored options is a $1 upcharge), and three side choices. I picked Mediterranean rice, Moroccan beans, and the Spanish eggplant; obviously I have very worldly tastes (ha-ha). The salad bar toppings are the one thing offered for free, and I went with a classic combo of tomato slices, cucumber, lettuce, red cabbage, peperoncini, and for my sauces asked for both classical tahini and also their garlic chimichurri. A choice of white or wheat pita is offered, but I turn down bread as I’m allergic to wheat (and delicious as it is, pita is empty calories).
If a photo is worth a thousand words, mine would say simply in two, “WORTH IT”.
My cruelty-free platter (sans upcharge hummus or extra sides added) cost only $8.95 plus tax, still affordable under $10 for NYC prices which is respectable in the big city where a standard lunch, especially if delivered and therefore incurring extra costs, can easily run $15 and up.
There were quite a few side dish choices that are acceptable for vegans, the portions are plentiful, and the price was right. All in all, meat menu options aside, I give this establishment an “A for effort”. Check them out if you get a chance — you won’t be disappointed.
